Nevada.

Lincoln was looking at the world through a sticky-eyed haze as he pushed himself through the short hallway, heading towards what passed for a living room in the tiny trailer “Mac” McCreary called home. When they’d arrived her, since he’d been driving a good portion of the night, they’d let him crash for a few hours while Mac and Darla had a little conversation about what she’d brought with her.

Now, he was walking slowly and exhaustively out into the living room, looking in on Darla and Mac sitting on the couch, looking at her laptop, with the screen flipped up.

“I can’t believe the battery life on this thing,” Mac said.

“Yeah, it’s pretty late model. Everything inside is solid state, less moving parts, means less power consumption. I’ve had it powered down a lot the past month, too, and whenever there was power, it got plugged in.”

“So remind me what I’m looking at here,” he said. “I know I’m just some paranoid scrub in the desert, but I used to be in government intelligence, and once upon a time, I actually knew what I was talking about.”

“Was that before or after you started wearing the tin foil hats?” Lincoln asked, emerging into the living room.

“One of these days, you’ll actually listen to me,” Mac replied. “I worked with the intelligence community for over ten years, what do you think made me so stinking paranoid?”

“So are you telling me you understand what she’s showing you there?”

“I got no clue,” Mac replied. “But she’s been explaining it. Talking about orbital decay and velocity degradation, and the fact that things are going to get a heck of a lot worse before they get better.”

“That would certainly explain why impacts are happening so much more often recently,” Lincoln clarified.

“Yeah, it sure would,” Mac replied. He looked up at him. “So what exactly am I supposed to do about it?”

“Well I knew you had those government connections, I was kind of hoping maybe you could help us get this info in front of the right eyes. If we can get some high-level buy in, maybe they can figure out how to finance some kind of—”

“Some kind of what? Satellite comms are down, man,” Mac said. “Like down down. Totally down.”

“Yeah, I get that,” Lincoln replied, “but there’s gotta be something.”

“Listen,” Mac said, “yeah, I was in intelligence. Even did a little contract work with the NSA. But I’m not a brainiac and I’m not an engineer. I don’t have a clue who is left alive that can even do anything with this.”

“There’s gotta be someone,” Darla said, leaning back on the couch. “We’ve been carrying this data around for almost two months, just looking for someone. Every time we think we’re on the right track, we end up at another dead end. I just need someone to look at it, it’s not like we’re asking for Daniel Welk himself or anything.”

“I’m sorry, I can’t—” Mac paused for a moment.

“Can’t what?” Lincoln asked.

“Wait,” he said. “Did you say Daniel Welk?”

“Yeah,” Darla replied.
